 Groningen impression

This website has its roots in the povince of Groningen.

**
Groningen  (local pronunciation:  Grönnen or Grunn' n) is a province in the north of the Netherlands with about
575,000 inhabitants and his capital Groningen.
**
Groningen is bordered to the north at the Wadden Sea, in the northeast at the inlets 'Eems' and 'Dollard',
in the east at Ost-Friesland (Lower Sachsen, Germany), in the south at the province of Drenthe
and in the west at the province of Friesland.

General

**

The province of Groningen is also called "City and Lowlands",because historically the City (originally Saxon)
and the surrounding countryside (originally Frisian) lived for a long time in discord.
The three historically 'Ommelander' quarters are: Hunsingo, Fivelingo and the Westerkwartier.
In the Lowlands and Oldambt was to the 15th century mostly Frisian spoken and in the "City of Groningen",
"Gorecht" and "Westerwolde" was Saxon spoken.
Now, almost everywhere in the 'Lowlands', Lower Saxonian dialects are spoken.
Only in the villages "De Wilp" and "Opende" in the Westerkwartier is partly spoken Frisian.
The province Groningen is after Drenthe, Friesland en Zeeland the most sparsely populated
province of the Netherlands, with 246 inhabitants per km².
